For nearly a decade, Operation Straight Spine (OSS) has provided, without cost, much needed care to the many indigent patents from Kolkata, India and surrounding regions who suffer with spinal disorders. It has been an honor and a privilege to serve those patients over the years and it is our hope to continue our mission for decades to come.

Like many endeavors of its kind, the first few years of OSS were the most difficult. We faced many challenges including raising funds, obtaining spinal implants and instruments, garnering local support, operating in less than ideal conditions, and recruiting operating room personnel. Despite the many challenges, OSS has persevered and continues to achieve the goals we set to change the lives of those we treat. The success of OSS is in no small part due to the amazing talent of those who selflessly donate their time and skill to our mission including nurses, surgical technicians, anesthesiologists, neurophysiologists, orthopedic and neurosurgical spinal surgeons and spinal implant consultants. It has been a privilege to work with all these dedicated individuals who are the heart and soul of the services OSS has provided over the years.

Two non-profit organizations, Spine Education and Research Foundation (SERF) and SPIRIT India have been formed to support Operation Straight Spine. These foundations owe much gratitude to the multiple corporate sponsors who have shared in our vision to provide corrective spinal surgery to those who do no have access to, or who could not otherwise afford, such care. Our many sponsors have been extremely generous with both monetary and equipment support.

OSS hopes to continue its mission to expand our services to the many individuals who benefit from the modern corrective spinal surgeries we provide. We are constantly seeking qualified volunteers and support staff as well as financial support to continue our cause. Recognition by the Scoliosis Research Society’s Global Outreach program is an important milestone in OSS’s efforts to continue reaching its goals set out nearly ten years ago.
